Global Democracy

Political Science Department at the University of Pennsylvania

Globalization and democracy are brought together in the general theoretical concept of development. Globalization is the process of integration of social and economic systems into more encompassing ones, and democratization brings individuals into common systems of collective action on the principles of equality and accountability. Although the globalization processes since the middle of the 1970s pushed countries toward openness and democracy, today democratic political environments have become necessary for peaceful and orderly processes of globalization to continue. Democratic development is now proceeding beyond the local and national to the global. The conclusions present the problems that are being and must be addressed to make global political processes and institutions more responsive and accountable.
